Our popular summer away-day lunch continues this year, again in Brighton.
Leonard White is an industry legend. He started his career as an actor, with highpoints in London's West-end, New York and Toronto before his career was interrupted by WWII. Returning to the business in 1946, his first experience of being "on camera" was an extra in "The Silver Darlings" at Welwyn Garden City Studios, swiftly followed by live TV work in the early days of the BBC service at "Ally Pally".
Leonard then turned his attentions to theatre as a director at the Oxford Playhouse and over the next ten years at many of the UK Repertory company theatres, along with some in Canada. Whilst in Canada, he had the great fortune to be trained in Television Production/Direction by CBC TV in Toronto, in readiness for their new service. It proved to be an excellent training course for both Public-service and Commercial broadcasting.
On returning to the UK, Leonard began his fifty year career as a Producer and Director in TV Drama for the UK Networks. Notably Leonard was the original Producer of the first forty episodes of "The Avengers" series and introduced leather clad Honor Blackman as Cathy Gale. For seven years he was in charge of the groundbreaking "Armchair Theatre" series of dramas, producing some 165 single teleplays - almost all of them being new-writing commissions.
Leonard White has been overall responsible for over 350 drama productions for the UK Networks, and is an EMMY International Award winner (1967-68). A decade later he was nominated for a BAFTA (1977). His knowledge and experience of TV is enviable, and he joins us in Brighton to share some of the highlights in what is to be a very interesting talk!
