Roman holiday: filming and incentives in Italy
Cinecittà means “cinema city” in Italian and it’s pronounced chee-nay chee-TAH.
It is the largest film and television production facility in continental Europe. The 99 acre complex is just 5.6 miles (9 km) from the centre of Rome and offers fully serviced production and post-production facilities for feature films, television, commercials/advertising, music videos/videoclips and photo shoots.
More than 3,000 productions have been made on the lot, from recent features like The Passion of Christ, Gangs of New York, HBO’S Rome and The Life Aquatic and Dino de Laurentiis’ Decameron to such cinema classics as Ben Hur, Cleopatra and the films of Federico Fellini.
With competition in eastern Europe becoming ever more aggressive, the Italians are moving to counter act. Co-production tax incentives, along with an anticipated production tax break, form part of their new initiatives to attract film-makers – as Lamberto will reveal.
