I Was Write All Along
Raymond Allen had always aspired to be a comedy writer, but never quite got his lucky break. To supplement his modest income from occasional gag writing from the likes of Frankie Howerd, Ray took a job at his local cinema – cleaning toilets!
When he came rushing in to work one day exclaiming that the BBC were interested in his sit-com idea, his colleagues really thought he was round the U-bend. However, Ray’s submission to the Beeb (his first ever sit-com attempt) about an accident prone, rather hapless character named Frank Spencer was commissioned. Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em was one of the BBC’s most popular comedy series, and still runs regularly.
Ray is a fascinating and terrifically funny man, who will share tales of writing for many of the top comedians of the 70s and 80s, along with his experiences in writing a top comedy series.
